Kids, one of my favorite Poems and Carols this time of year is Longfellow's "Christmas Bells." Written two years after his wife's death and in the middle of the Civil War.
"'There is no peace on earth,' I said, 'For Hate is strong and Mocks the Song, Of Peace on Earth"
These words seem just as true today as they did in war-torn America in 1863. Why can we claim that Christmas points to "Peace on Earth?" Hate and suffering are all around us, on our TVs, in our Facebook feed and in our hearts. There is so much that is horrible and wrong in the world.
Only because of Christ's birth and a future hope from his death which has defeated the power of sin, the source of our misery, can we say we have peace.
One day soon, children won't get cancer or die from awful diseases. War will cease. Abuse of all kinds will be no more. God is not dead, he came into this world as a baby on Christmas, and he is coming back soon as a resurrected savior to finally redeem the world.
And that is certainly worth celebrating this Christmas. Peace on Earth, good-will to men!
Merry Christmas
